How soon does my puppy need to see a vet?

Your puppy’s first vet visit should be when they are six to eight weeks old. Some breeders might start their pups’ vaccinations before sending them off to their new home, so make sure to have the proper paperwork for your vet visit.

One of the most important things to consider when you first get a puppy is your puppy’s first vet visit. You can push their first visit to ten weeks of age if necessary, but the longer you wait, the more you put your pup at risk.

How do vaccinations for puppies’ work?

In your puppy’s first year, they will have to visit the vet a few times to receive their puppy shots. Your puppy should receive their first vaccination at six to eight weeks old. Other vaccinations are every two to four weeks until they are fourteen to sixteen weeks old.

Four core vaccines are recommended for all puppies – distemper, canine hepatitis, canine parvovirus, and rabies. The rabies vaccine is required by law in many states.

Your veterinarian will be able to guide you through the process and recommend any non-core vaccines your puppy may need.

Remember to always ask questions if you are not sure about something. Try to stay calm throughout your pet’s first vet visit, your puppy will notice!
