Bringing a puppy home is exciting. Owning a dog is a big responsibility. Dogs are a source of daily joy, but raising the perfect puppy comes with challenges. What is owning a Labrador Retriever all about?

Anyone who wants a puppy, especially families with children who want a dog, should first research dog breeds. Not all dog breeds are the same. And what’s great about dogs is that you can find a breed that will comfortably fit in with your lifestyle.

The Labrador Retriever dog breed is one of Petland Florida’s very top dog recommendations. Labs are intelligent, eager to please, easy to train, and very outgoing and friendly. To help you decide if a Labrador Retriever is right for you, we’ve put together what it’s like to own this dog.

Did you know that for the past thirty years, Labrador Retrievers have ranked within the top 5 family dogs in every town and city in America except for Providence, Rhode Island? The reason for their continued popularity is their temperament. For anyone who wants a good-tempered dog, owning a Labrador Retriever can easily meet and exceed your expectations.

Labrador Retrievers are very friendly and outgoing. They have a sweet nature, and come packed with a lot of energy. This purebred dog breed carries itself with a joyful attitude. Labs love spending time with their families and playing. They’re especially fond of children. Labradors are gentle and protective of their families.

As a high energy breed, Labradors love going for jogs with their owners. They belong to the Sporting Group of canines, and they’re swimmers. Labs are a match made in heaven for people and families that are active. If you’re a jogger, if you like to go for hikes, fishing, swimming, and camping, a Labrador Retriever is a breed that will definitely keep up.

Labrador Retrievers are medium-to-large size dogs. They can actually seem much bigger than their true size thanks to their energy. If Labs had a slogan, it would be, “Always happy, always hungry.”

This breed burns a lot of energy running around and has to consume a lot of calories to compensate. You’ll never see an overweight Labrador Retriever. But the dietary needs of your Lab are a cost consideration. Like most healthy dogs, your Labrador will need a protein-rich, nutrient dense diet of high quality dog food.

The exercise requirements of a Lab should be a major consideration before you buy a Labrador Retriever. Labs need as much as 2 hours of daily exercise. A Labrador will be happiest if its owner takes in on jogs and long walks every day with a hearty game of fetch added for fun. Labrador Retrievers who do not exercise enough can develop destructive and “hyper” behaviors.

Petland Florida only recommends Labrador Retriever puppies to individuals and families who already lead active lifestyles. If you’re prepared to exercise with your dog and devote time and energy to playing fetch and other games, your Lab will be very happy.

Labrador Retrievers are natural born learners. As “people pleasers,” Labs really enjoy the puppy training process. It’s a source of bonding for them! Labradors are quick learners, but with all that energy, it could be challenging to get them to focus.

We recommend that you train your Lab puppy with basic commands daily, but keep the training sessions short, between 5 – 10 minutes. Rewarding your Lab with puppy treats when he shows obedience will speed up the process. Labs also love agility courses. By using an agility course, you can train your Labrador Retriever with more complex commands.

Socialization is another aspect of puppy development that plays into puppy training. Owners of Labrador Retriever puppies should expose their Lab to new people, places, and things. Labs are naturally friendly, and as the owner you can train your puppy to respond and behave well when it’s socializing with new people.

All Petland puppies purchased at Petland Florida are automatically enrolled in our free puppy training course. There’s no obligation to attend. But new puppy parents who bring their Petland puppies to this free 6-week class reap the benefits of bonding with their new puppies. Not only will your puppy have fun at our training site, but your puppy will get a chance to meet the other puppies and owners in the class. This provides an added layer of socialization to aid your puppy’s development. A Petland puppy can be your perfect puppy with our free puppy training class!
