Are you searching for a little cuddly companion? If so, look no further than the cute and cuddly Teddy Bear dog. Since its creation in the early 2000s, the Teddy Bear dog’s popularity has skyrocketed throughout the country. It’s easy to see why. With their adorable little face and cute button nose, Teddy Bear dog is one of the most adorable dog breeds to come into existence. Teddy Bear puppies are designer dogs, which means they are a mixed breed. These dogs are a crossbreed between the Shih Tzu and Bichon Frise breeds—that’s where they get their good looks and small size!

Of course, their cute looks and tiny size are just some of the traits that make this breed so irresistible. If you’re not sure whether the Teddy Bear is the best fit for you, here are a few key things that should help you decide!

History

Following the designer breed craze of the 1980s and 1990s, the trend of breeding different dogs for certain qualities continued into the new millennium. The early 2000s saw the creation of many new cute breeds, including the Teddy Bear dog. Teddy Bears are a mix of the Bichon Frise and Shih Tzu breeds so each littler may look different from each other. Like other designer dog breeds, this is because Teddy Bear puppies gain different traits from each parent. The Teddy Bear was specifically bred for their cute physical appearance and their hypoallergenic coats. Since the early 2000s, the Teddy Bear dog has been the lovable little furry friend of many families. These furry cuties are also known as the Zuchon or Shuchon.

Size

Teddy Bear sizes vary depending on their parents. Generally, most Teddy Bears are very small in size, growing no more than 12 inches in height. Teddy Bears also weigh 12 to pounds.

Temperament

Teddy Bears have different temperaments that depend on their breeding and training. A well-trained Teddy puppy is a delight to have in a home. They’re very affectionate and lively little dogs. They are also playful, enjoying any game or activity that involves their loved ones. In fact, they can grow very attached to their family members and like to be with them whenever possible.Another great trait about these dogs is that they love to cuddle (more so than any other breed). Expect to spend lots of time cuddling with your Teddy Bear puppy or being followed by them.

Due to their social and outgoing personalities, they get along very well with strangers and other dogs. They even get along with non-canine pets like cats. Just make sure your Teddy bear puppy is socialized before you begin introducing them to new people and experiences. Because Teddy Bear puppies love being around their loved ones, they can develop separation anxiety.

Other traits Teddy Bear puppies possess include:

  • An eagerness to please their owners
  •  High intelligence
  • A love for humans, especially their loved ones. This makes them different from other small breeds who tend to be independent.
  • Quiet or less vocal than other small dogs

Grooming

The Teddy Bear puppy needs regular grooming to keep up their cute looks. Teddy Bears are hypoallergenic, which means they do not shed much of their fur. As their name suggests, they look a lot like teddy bears due to their soft, fluffy coat. For the best grooming, your Teddy Bear’s coat should be long or trimmed short based on your preferences.

You’ll need to brush their coat frequently, at least two to three times a week. Otherwise, their coat may become matted and tangled with knots, making it extra difficult to groom or look cute. Make sure you bathe your little Teddy Bear on a monthly basis so that their fur is shiny. We also recommend brushing their teeth and cleaning their ears as much as you can to prevent infections and other diseases. We highly recommend that you do not neglect grooming your little Teddy Bear. When your Teddy Bear’s coat is unkempt, it can lead to very painful hotspots in your puppy’s skin. This can transform into skin infections or even attract fleas.

Exercise Level

As with other small breeds, the Teddy Bear is not an active dog. They do not need a high amount of exercise to be fit or healthy. Of course, Teddy Bear dogs do need some form of activity. Your puppy may need a daily walk or a few hours of playtime to be happy. They also need some time with you so be ready to spend most of your time being cuddled and kissed by your Teddy Bear puppy. Never ignore your Teddy Bear puppy. We promise that those puppy kisses and endearing eyes are worth it!

Training

Teddy Bears inherit their traits from their Shih Tzu and Bichon Frise parents. Both of these little dogs are intelligent and eager to learn. Naturally, their Teddy Bear offspring are too! Teddy Bears are one of the easiest breeds to train. They love following orders, especially when yummy treats are involved! However, a small part of their spunkiness does come out. Teddy Bears aren’t difficult but they can become aloof or bored with repetitive tricks. Keep a bag of treats and toys with you while you train your Teddy Bear pup. That way your Teddy Bear pays close attention to the lessons and continues to learn!

Is the Teddy Bear your newest furry bestie? Maybe. Remember that while Teddy Bear dogs are small, cute and cuddly, they can be clingy. They want your love and attention as often as they can get it. If they do not feel that they’re getting enough from you, they may turn to bad behaviors like biting the furniture or eating from the trash. They also do not like being alone at all. Of course, they can make very loving pets, and many families have enjoyed keeping Teddy Bear dogs in their lives. As long as you understand their wants and needs, be ready to have your life changed by a Teddy Bear puppy that you’ll forever love!
